The Sunday Times, March, 2019

April 9, 2019 / Comments Off on The Sunday Times, March, 2019

The Sunday Times Newspaper, March 24 2019, “Want to restore your old stove or create Moroccan-style plaster walls?”

A Tadelakt is a traditional waterproof plaster finish from Morocco: as you say, it looks and feels like polished concrete. It was used by the Berbers to waterproof earthen cisterns for storing drinking water. In Morocco, public baths and bathrooms are still finished this way. The lime plaster is made waterproof through its inherent properties and the application technique. The olive-oil soap that is rubbed into the surface reacts with the lime to form calcium stearate. This results in a surface that is durable, as well as water- and scratch-resistant. It’s also sustainable.
Only employ experts who are trained to use it. We used tadelaktlondon.co.uk. It costs £120-£150 a sq metre, including labour.

Sunday Times Newspaper, Februrary 18, 2018, “Inside TV cook Rachel Khoo’s little London kitchen” (words Alexandra Goss)

The silky, marble-like feel of the bathroom walls was created with tadelakt, a waterproof plaster finish used in Moroccan architecture; again, Khoo got the idea after following a specialist company, Tadelakt London, on Instagram. Her crowning glory, however, is the portable tables in the kitchen, which are on wheels and can be raised or lowered to different heights, allowing them to function as coffee tables, dining tables or extensions to the work surface.

MASTER EN SUITE
Both practical and decorative, the sliding doors here take their cue from traditional barn doors, while the brasswork reflects Liz’s  industrial leanings. The walls are finished in polished tadelakt to contrast with the dark blue freestanding bath.

LivingEtc Magazine, November 2016

Living Etc Magazine, November 2016, “1 FEEL THE PEEL” article (Words Jo Leevers, Picture research  Nicola Rowe), page 175:

There’s  a certain insouciance that comes with a bathing space that celebrates perfectly imperfect plasterwork. It’s a weathered worn look that says, ‘This old riad? Had it for years, darling…’ Hotels that work the peeled-back, palazzo-look include G-Rough in Rome and London’s Rough Luxe. The Trick – as all hip hotels know- is to add elements that contrast  dramatically with the rough, be it slick contemporary artwork, poised Gio Ponti chairs or shiny brass work Just don’t leave an uninitiated builder alone in the house – he’ll have those rough walls skimmed up in no time.

Project details: Actor Lupita Nyong’o once soaked in this bath amid a sea of rosebuds for Vogue. It’s at El Fenn, Morocco, and is made from Tadelakt… But Tadelakt London can create walls, £125 per sq m, and a bath like this for approx £2 000.
